Chairman's Cup County Final Rugby Tournament

Chairman’s Cup County Final Rugby Tournament

Twenty of our children attending the iconic Oxford University Rugby Ground at Iffley Road, Oxford over the course of the day on Wednesday to compete in The Chairman’s County Cup Rugby Tournament. The 'B' team competing in a C tournament in the morning and The 'A' team, having won their previous tournament, qualified for The A tournament.

The B’s section started in a round robin league format against four other teams. They started quickly with some excellent support play, running in 7 tries to St Barnabas 2. The Batt then came up against an extremely well drilled Wantage team who ran onto the ball at pace. The Batt did hold them at two tries each for a while but two late tries gave Wantage a 4-2 win. The following two games against William Fletcher and Stanford in the Vale ended up in 5-5 and 7-7 draws to give The Batt a respectable 3rd place finish in their group.

The A’s faced three other schools in their pool, in the scorching heat of the afternoon, unusually quick off the blocks with a 7-2 win against SS Mary and John. In their second group game against Millbrook School another glut of tries saw almost every player run in a try to finish with another 7-2 win. The Batt did not ease up on their opponents for the final group game running in a further nine tries but were pushed all the way by St Nicholas form Abingdon who replied with seven of their own. Topping the group, The Batt then faced tough resistance in the semi final from Kirtlington. In a match, which went to extra time, The Batt snuck through 6-5 winners. Onto the final and a repeat against St Nicholas saw The Batt, with the mental advantage of having beaten them in the group stage, capitalise on this running out 8-4 winners to win the main Chairman’s Trophy for the third time in 7 years!

Huge congratulations to all involved in what was another great sporting achievement for The Batt.
