West Oxfordshire Year 5 Cricket Festival

Last Friday a group of ten of our year 5 boys travelled over to the picturesque Stonesfield Cricket Ground to compete against teams from all over West Oxfordshire.

The Batt opened up their account with a strong convincing win over St Peters from Cassington. Tight bowling restricted St Peters to 220 off their 8 overs and some big hitting in reply, especially from Harry and the debutant Will with consecutive sixes propelled The Batt to 272 in reply.

The second game tightened up a little as we struggled to get the ball to the boundary but still managed to amass a total of 253 against Bletchingdon. Again, tight bowling and great catching enabled The Batt to keep the score down, in reply, to only 236.

The third game was against our cricketing arch nemesis, Witney Community Primary, and again they proved our undoing by soundly beating us with a score of 267 to 210. However coming second in our group, we progressed to the semi-final where we faced an unbeaten Eynsham team who dominated the game with some lightening quick bowling to put us on the back foot from the off and with scores of 267 to 216 we lost our second game of the tournament.

All that was left to play for was the third place play off against Our Lady of Lourdes and in a tight affair on a relatively small pitch the game ebbed and flowed through the overs with The Batt setting an average score of 250. However not for the first time in the tournament some excellent tight line bowling and fantastic catching in the field meant that Our Lady’s were always behind the asking rate, falling 12 runs short of The Batt’s total.

Congratulations to everyone in what was a great festival of cricket!
