At The Batt School, writing skills are developed through a high-quality text based approach through which pupils develop an understanding of writing for a purpose. Children are encouraged to take ownership of their writing, to plan for maximum impact and to take responsibility for editing, ensuring the accuracy of their spelling, punctuation and grammar.

Exploration - Children will explore a wide range of literature including fiction, poetry, drama and non-fiction texts to inspire and support their own writing

Co-operation - Children will share their ideas for writing with others and use the feedback of adults and peers to improve their own writing.

Communication - Children will understand that talking and framing their ideas orally is the first step in planning their writing. They will also come to understand the numerous ways in which writing helps then to convey their ideas, thoughts, emotions, imagination, knowledge and information.

Innovation - Children bring their knowledge of a wide range of texts to help improve their own writing. Over time they will understand the importance of the drafting process to improve their writing and begin to develop their own style and 'voice' on paper.
